فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ ﴿6﴾
So (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) withdraw from them. The Day that the caller will call (them) to a terrible thing.
فَتَوَلَّ fatawalla So turn away
عَنْهُمْ ۘ ʿanhum from them
يَوْمَ yawma (The) Day
يَدْعُ yadʿu will call
ٱلدَّاعِ l-dāʿi the caller
إِلَىٰ ilā to
شَىْءٍۢ shayin a thing
نُّكُرٍ nukurin terrible

(Ayah 6) ➊ { فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ:} That is, when warning or frightening these people brings no benefit at all, then you too turn away from them and leave them to their own state. Your responsibility was to convey, and you have conveyed it.
{يَوْمَ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ اِلٰى شَيْءٍ نُّكُرٍ: ’’ يَوْمَ ‘‘} is in the accusative due to the omission of the preposition, meaning before it is the preposition {’’إِلٰي‘‘} which has been omitted, making it accusative. (Baghawi) Alusi said: {’’ هٰذَا قَوْلُ الْحَسَنِ ‘‘} that this is the statement of Hasan, meaning {’’ فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ إِلٰی يَوْمٍ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ فِيْهِ إِلٰی شَيْءٍ نُّكُرٍ ‘‘} "So turn away from them until the Day when the caller will call to a terrible thing." Or {’’ يَوْمَ ‘‘} is accusative due to an omitted verb with {’’اُنْظُرْ‘‘}, meaning "Turn away from them and wait for the Day when..." The caller refers to Israfil (peace be upon him), whose blowing will cause all people to rise from their graves. {’’ يَدْعُ ‘‘} is originally {’’يَدْعُوْ‘‘}, and since the waw is not pronounced here, it is not written in the Uthmani Mushaf. {’’ الدَّاعِ ‘‘} is originally {’’الدَّاعِيُ‘‘}, the "ya" is omitted for lightness, and {’’ شَيْءٍ نُّكُرٍ ‘‘} refers to reckoning, {’’ نُكُرٍ ‘‘} meaning {’’ مُنْكِرٌ ‘‘}, something unpleasant, strange, a unique thing that has never been seen before.
