وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ ﴿4﴾
And indeed there has come to them news (in this Qur’ân) wherein there is (enough warning) to check (them from evil),
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly
جَآءَهُم jāahum has come to them
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ l-anbāi the information
مَا wherein
فِيهِ fīhi wherein
مُزْدَجَرٌ muz'dajarun (is) deterrence

(Ayah 4) {وَ لَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ مِّنَ الْاَنْۢبَآءِ … : ’’نَبَأٌ‘‘} refers to important news, {’’ الْاَنْۢبَآءِ ‘‘} is its plural. {’’ مُزْدَجَرٌ ‘‘ ’’زَجَرَ يَزْجُرُ زَجْرًا‘‘} (n) (to stop, prevent, scold) is the verbal noun of the form "ifti‘al" with a meem prefix, which means "to refrain." It is said: {’’زَجَرْتُهُ فَازْدَجَرَ‘‘} "I forbade him, so he refrained." Originally it was {’’مُزْتَجَرٌ‘‘} (on the pattern of {مُفْتَعَلٌ}), due to the presence of "zaa," the "taa" of the form "ifti‘al" was changed to "daal," so it became {’’ مُزْدَجَرٌ ‘‘}. The tanween in it is for magnification. That is, in the form of the Qur’an, such important news from the stories of the nations who denied the messengers has certainly reached them, in which there is complete provision for a person to refrain from following desires and denying the messengers.
