وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ﴿3﴾
They belied (the Verses of Allâh - this Qur’ân), and followed their own lusts. And every matter will be settled (according to the kind of deeds: good deeds will take their doers to Paradise, and similarly evil deeds will take their doers to Hell).
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ wakadhabū And they denied
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ wa-ittabaʿū and followed
أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ ahwāahum their desires
وَكُلُّ wakullu but (for) every
أَمْرٍۢ amrin matter
مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭ mus'taqirrun (will be a) settlement

(Ayah 3) ➊ {وَ كَذَّبُوْا وَ اتَّبَعُوْۤا اَهْوَآءَهُمْ:’’ اَهْوَآءَ‘‘ ’’هَوًي‘‘} is the plural, desires. That is, the reason the disbelievers denied the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his miracles was not any rational matter, but only the following of their desires. The word {’’هَوًي‘‘} (desire) is a generic noun that applies to both singular and plural, but here {’’ اَهْوَآءَ ‘‘} (plural) is mentioned because the reason for the disbelievers denying the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not just one desire, but many desires that prevented them from being obedient to him. For example, the desire for leadership, envy, the desire to follow their forefathers, the desire to remain firm on their patrons, the desire to remain unrestrained and not be subordinate to anyone, etc.

{ وَ كُلُّ اَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ: ’’قَرَّ يَقِرُّ‘‘} (ض) to settle. There is exaggeration in {’’اِسْتَقَرَّ‘‘}, meaning just as every moving thing eventually comes to rest somewhere, and every action, whether good or bad, has some outcome, similarly, do not think that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) will keep calling you to the truth and you will keep denying him, and his being on the truth and your being on falsehood will never be established. Rather, a time will come when the reality of everything will become clear and it will be proven that he (peace be upon him) was truly Allah’s Messenger, and denying him and calling him a magician was wrong.
