Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 6) {وَالْبَحْرِالْمَسْجُوْرِ: ’’سَجَرَيَسْجُرُ‘‘} (n) comes in several meanings. {’’سَجَرَالتَّنُّوْرَ‘‘} “He filled the oven with fuel and kindled it.” {’’سَجَرَالْمَاءُالنَّهْرَ‘‘} “The water filled the canal.” {’’سَجَرَالْكَلْبَ ({شَدَّهُبِالسَّاجُوْرِ} “He tied the dog with a leash.” In this verse, the greatest creature found on the surface of the earth, the sea, is sworn by and presented as evidence of His power to punish on the Day of Resurrection. The word {’’ الْمَسْجُوْرِ ‘‘}, in terms of language, expresses three states, all of which can be intended here. One is that it is completely filled, and despite the passage of ages, its fullness has not diminished. Qatadah said: {’’ اَلْمُمْتَلِيْ‘‘}[ طبري : ۳۲۵۹۴، بسند صحیح ] “Filled.” Then, it is not still, but rather, it is always in a state of boiling and agitation. Mujahid said: {’’اَلْمُوْقَدُ ‘‘}[ طبري : ۳۲۵۹۲، بسند حسن ] “Ignited.” See also the commentary of Surah Takwir, Ayah (6): «وَاِذَاالْبِحَارُسُجِّرَتْ ». Then Allah Almighty has restrained it from surging onto the land. If ever it is given a little permission to emerge in the form of a storm, entire cities vanish from existence. Tabari has narrated with an authentic chain from Ali bin Abi Talhah, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): [ {’’ الْبَحْرِالْمَسْجُوْرِ ‘‘} اَلْمَحْبُوْسُ ][ طبري : ۳۲۵۹۶ ]
