(Ayah 30) {اَمْيَقُوْلُوْنَشَاعِرٌنَّتَرَبَّصُبِهٖرَيْبَالْمَنُوْنِ: ’’تَرَبَّصَيَتَرَبَّصُ‘‘} (tafa‘‘ul) "To await the coming of some evil or good." {’’ الْمَنُوْنِ ‘‘ ’’مَنَّيَمُنُّمَنًّا‘‘} (n) means "to cut." {’’ الْمَنُوْنِ ‘‘} on the pattern of {’’فَعُوْلٌ‘‘} (the one who cuts) refers to death, because it cuts the rope of life, and also to time, because it too keeps cutting away the days of life. The original meaning of {’’ رَيْبَ ‘‘} is doubt and restlessness, but when it is used with time, it refers to the calamities of time, because they keep a person restless.
From here, Allah Almighty, in a tone of denial and amazement, mentioned the ignorant statements of these polytheists fifteen (15) times with the word {’’ اَمْ ‘‘}, and after every {’’ اَمْ ‘‘}, established a charge against them by asking a question, to which none of them has an answer. Thus, in this verse it is said: «اَمْيَقُوْلُوْنَشَاعِرٌ » "Or do they say that he is a poet?" After quoting this statement of the disbelievers, there was no need for refutation, because the very existence of the Noble Qur’an is sufficient to refute it. However, an answer was given to their statement that we await the calamities of time for him, that some disaster may befall him, or his time of death may come, with which the chain of his call will come to an end.
