وَجَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُ ﴿19﴾
And the stupor of death will come in truth: "This is what you have been avoiding!"
وَجَآءَتْ wajāat And will come
سَكْرَةُ sakratu (the) stupor
ٱلْمَوْتِ l-mawti (of) death
بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ bil-ḥaqi in truth
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
مَا (is) what
كُنتَ kunta you were

(Ayah 19) ➊ { وَ جَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ الْمَوْتِ:} After mentioning that whatever a person does is known to Allah and is also written and preserved in the person's book of deeds and will be presented before him, now the two times when this reality will come before a person are described: the first is the time of death and the second is the Day of Resurrection. In this verse, death is mentioned; the stupor of death refers to its severity and intensity. Allah Almighty has used the past tense for both death and the Day of Resurrection here, i.e., {’’ وَ جَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ الْمَوْتِ ‘‘} (and the stupor of death came) and {’’ وَ نُفِخَ فِي الصُّوْرِ ‘‘} (and the trumpet was blown), even though these events are to occur in the future. The purpose is to present the scene and to make it clear that their coming is so certain that it is as if they have already come.
➋ Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) described the last moments of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying that there was a bowl of water in front of him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would dip both his hands in it and wipe them over his face, and at the same time he would say: [ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ اللّٰهُ ، إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ سَكَرَاتٍ ] [ بخاري، المغازي، باب مرض النبي صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم و وفاتہ : ۴۴۴۹ ] "There is no god but Allah, surely death has many agonies."
{ بِالْحَقِّ:} The meaning of the stupor of death coming with the truth is that with the agony of the soul departing, that reality will come before him which was veiled in the world, and the person will see with his own eyes that what the messengers had told was true and real.
{ ذٰلِكَ مَا كُنْتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيْدُ: ’’حَادَ يَحِيْدُ حَيْدَةً‘‘} ({ بَاعَ يَبِيْعُ}) To turn away from something, to avoid it, to run far from it. Every person, by nature, runs from death, but there is no escape from it, nor can a person's desire to live forever be fulfilled. See the exegesis of Surah Jumu'ah (8) and Ahzab (16). That is, this is the reality from which you used to turn away and avoid facing, and you wished to escape it and continue doing as you pleased.
