Shaitân (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allâh and from As-Salât (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 91) {اِنَّمَا يُرِيْدُ الشَّيْطٰنُ اَنْ يُّوْقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ …: } After declaring the prohibition of gambling and alcohol, now their religious and worldly harms are being mentioned. The religious harm is that alcohol and gambling become a cause for preventing and neglecting prayer and the remembrance of Allah, and the worldly harm is that they create enmity and hatred among people, and the presence of these evils in both is absolutely clear.
It is narrated from Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I came to some people from the Ansar and Muhajirin, and they said, “Come, we will feed you and give you alcohol to drink.” This was before the prohibition of alcohol. So I went to them in a garden, and they had a roasted camel’s head and a waterskin of alcohol. I ate and drank with them. They began to discuss the Muhajirin and Ansar, so I said, “The Muhajirin are better than the Ansar.” Then a man picked up a jawbone from the head and struck me with it, injuring my nose. I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about this, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse about alcohol: «اِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَ الْمَيْسِرُ » [ مسلم، فضائل الصحابۃ، باب فی فضل سعد بن أبی وقاص، قبل ح : ۱۷۴۸ ]
