O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islâm), Allâh will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allâh, and never fear of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allâh which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allâh is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 54) {يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا مَنْ يَّرْتَدَّ مِنْكُمْ عَنْ دِيْنِهٖ:} Allah Almighty, who knows the past, present, and future, already knew that after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), many Arab tribes would apostatize from Islam, so He revealed this verse beforehand regarding the future. Thus, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, news began to arrive that, except for three places—Makkah, Madinah, and Bahrain—all regions’ Arab tribes had apostatized. They began to say that they would perform prayer but would not pay zakat. At that time, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) fought jihad against these apostates. Allah Almighty described five qualities of those through whom this fitnah of apostasy would be ended. It is evident that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions, the Ansar and Muhajirin, and the Mujahideen who came from Yemen, possessed all five of these virtues. How unfortunate are those who harbor enmity against such people about whom Allah Almighty Himself testifies: (1) Allah loves them and they love Allah. (2) They are very gentle with the believers. (3) They are very stern against the disbelievers. (4) They strive in the way of Allah. (5) And they do not fear the blame of any blamer. The leader and caliph of these fortunate people was Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes that when the Arabs turned away from the religion at the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) called the Muslims from Yemen, had them fight jihad, and all the Arabs became Muslim; this is glad tidings for them. (Muwadhih)

It is narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “This is his (Abu Musa’s) people.” (Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Jarir) The author of “Hidayat al-Mustaneer” has graded this as Hasan. In short, these virtues were present in Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), his companions among the Muhajirin and Ansar, and the people of Yemen.

The author of al-Kashshaf has written that there were twelve (12) sects among those who apostatized; of these, three sects had already apostatized during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him): (1) Banu Mudlij, whose chief was Aswad Ansi, who claimed prophethood and was killed by Fayruz Daylami. (The commentator of al-Kashshaf has written that Aswad Ansi was not from Banu Mudlij but from Banu Ans.) (2) The people of Musaylimah the Liar, Banu Hanifah, against whom Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) fought, and he was killed at the hands of Wahshi (may Allah be pleased with him), the killer of Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him). (3) Banu Asad, whose chief was Tulayhah bin Khuwailid; Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was sent to subdue them. This person eventually became Muslim.
