And you see those in whose hearts there is a disease (of hypocrisy), they hurry to their friendship, saying: "We fear lest some misfortune of a disaster may befall us." Perhaps Allâh may bring a victory or a decision according to His Will. Then they will become regretful for what they have been keeping as a secret in themselves.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 52) {فَتَرَى الَّذِيْنَ فِيْ قُلُوْبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ ……:} That is, the hypocrites who rush towards the Jews and Christians and make friendships with them, and say that we fear lest the Muslims, due to some turn of events, become overpowered; then what will become of us? At that time, their friendship will benefit us. So Allah Almighty said that it is also possible, rather it will certainly happen (the word {’’عَسٰي‘‘} in the command of Allah and His Messenger comes in the meaning of certainty) that the Muslims will be victorious, the disbelievers will be subdued, then they will be killed, or exiled, or they will have to pay jizyah, then these hypocrites will regret that we belonged neither here nor there. Thus, Allah Almighty’s promise was fulfilled, the Muslims were granted victory, the Jews of Banu Qurayzah were killed, Banu Nadir were expelled from the land of Madinah, and these people kept wringing their hands in regret over their hypocrisy.
