And so judge (you O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) among them by what Allâh has revealed and follow not their vain desires, but beware of them lest they turn you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) far away from some of that which Allâh has sent down to you. And if they turn away, then know that Allâh’s Will is to punish them for some sins of theirs. And truly, most of men are Fâsiqûn (rebellious and disobedient to Allâh).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 49) ➊ {وَ اَنِ احْكُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ بِمَاۤ اَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ …… :} That is, even though these People of the Book remain at odds with each other, you should not be affected by their mutual differences. You must judge according to the Shari‘ah revealed by Allah Almighty, and beware of them, lest any desire to please a group among them or to reconcile with them should turn you away from the commands revealed by Allah Almighty. See also Surah An-Nisa (113), Surah Bani Isra’il (73–75), and Surah Al-Qalam (8, 9).

{فَاِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمْ اَنَّمَا يُرِيْدُ اللّٰهُ اَنْ يُّصِيْبَهُمْ بِبَعْضِ ذُنُوْبِهِمْ:} That is, Allah Almighty intends to deprive them of the ability to have faith, and thus punish them in this world with exile, jizyah, or death, because there are very few among them who are just and follow the truth. This shows what kinds of harm a person’s sins can bring upon him; that is why the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in the sermon: [ وَنَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنْ شُرُوْرِ اَنْفُسِنَا وَمِنْ سَيِّاٰتِ اَعْمَالِنَا ] [ ابن ماجہ، النکاح، باب خطبۃ النکاح : ۱۸۹۲ ] “We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of our souls and from the evil of our deeds.”
