Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
(Remember) when Al-Hawâriyyûn (the disciples) said: "O ‘Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Can your Lord send down to us a table spread (with food) from heaven?" ‘Îsâ (Jesus) said: "Fear Allâh, if you are indeed believers."

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 112) ➊ {اِذْقَالَالْحَوَارِيُّوْنَ … :} The disciples believed in Allah and His Messenger, as mentioned in the previous verse, so their question was not out of doubt or suspicion regarding Allah’s power, but rather to attain inner satisfaction, just as Abraham (peace be upon him) asked about the resurrection of the dead. (Ibn Kathir) And these words, “Can your Lord do this?” do not mean that this is beyond Allah’s power, but rather the intent was to ask whether this is against Allah’s wisdom, or if there is any impediment to it? “Maidah” is the large tray on which food is placed. Now, the word maidah is used for both the tray and the food. (Raghib)
➋ {قَالَاتَّقُوااللّٰهَ …:} Because demanding such miracles by specifying them is akin to commanding and being rebellious, therefore fear Allah and do not ask such a question. (Kabir) Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: “Fear Allah,” meaning a servant should not test Allah to see whether He fulfills his request or not, even though the Master is extremely kind. (Muwaddih) Another meaning is that develop piety within yourselves and make it a means to obtain the maidah, as He said: «وَمَنْيَّتَّقِاللّٰهَيَجْعَلْلَّهٗمَخْرَجًا(3) وَّيَرْزُقْهُمِنْحَيْثُلَايَحْتَسِبُ »[ الطلاق : ۲، ۳ ] “And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Ibn Kathir)
