Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 6) ➊ { وَ يُعَذِّبَ الْمُنٰفِقِيْنَ وَ الْمُنٰفِقٰتِ … :} After mentioning the entry of believing, striving men and women into Paradise due to the tranquility sent down by Allah, He then mentioned the punishment for those who, as a result of this battle, became the target of Allah’s wrath and curse, and Hell became their abode. The hypocrites and disbelievers were given this punishment also at the hands of the Muslims’ swords, as He said: « قَاتِلُوْهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اللّٰهُ » [ التوبۃ : ۱۴] “Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands.” And also through continuous fear and humiliation, and by witnessing the successes of the Muslims with their own eyes. The punishment of the Hereafter is in addition to this and far greater than all of these. Here, the mention of the hypocrites before the disbelievers is to alert the Muslims that the disbelief of the hypocrites is hidden, so they can cause more harm; therefore, Muslims should neither forget them nor ever be heedless of them. The mention of hypocrite and polytheist women alongside hypocrite and polytheist men is because they are also fully confidants, supportive in every way, and participants in all conspiracies.

{ الظَّآنِّيْنَ بِاللّٰهِ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ:} “The hypocrites” refers to the hypocrites of Madinah, and “the polytheists” refers to the polytheists of Makkah. Allah gave both of them the punishment of humiliation and disgrace, because the hypocrites had this wrong assumption about Allah that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who went with him to perform the ‘Umrah of Hudaybiyyah would not be able to return to Madinah, and the polytheists would destroy them there. And the polytheists thought that Allah would never be able to protect His religion from being wiped out, and the word of disbelief would remain exalted. (Qurtubi, etc.)

{ عَلَيْهِمْ دَآىِٕرَةُ السَّوْءِ:} For the explanation of this sentence, see the commentary of Surah Tawbah, Ayah (98). Here, some words are omitted which are understood automatically: {’’ أَيْ اَلظَّانِّيْنَ بِاللّٰهِ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ وَالْمُتَرَبِّصِيْنَ لَكُمُ الدَّوَائِرَ، عَلَيْهِمْ دَائِرَةُ السَّوْءِ‘‘} “(So that He may punish those hypocrite men and women and polytheist men and women) who think evil thoughts about Allah and are waiting for the turns of fate to befall you; the evil turn is going to befall them themselves.”
