سُوْرَةُ الْجَاثِيَةِ
Surah Al-Jaathiya (45) — Ayah 8
يَسْمَعُ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُصِرُّ مُسْتَكْبِرًا كَأَن لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا ۖ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ﴿8﴾

Who hears the Verses of Allâh (being) recited to him, yet persists with pride as if he heard them not. So announce to him a painful torment!

(Ayah 8) ➊ { يَسْمَعُ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ تُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِ …:} The one who hears the verses of Allah, which are recited before him, then persists arrogantly in his disbelief and polytheism as if he had not heard them at all, so give him the glad tidings of a painful punishment.
➋ { ثُمَّ يُصِرُّ مُسْتَكْبِرًا:} Here, the word {’’ ثُمَّ ‘‘} is used to express amazement, that if he had not heard the verses of Allah, it would have been a different matter, but the amazement is at the fact that the verses of Allah are recited before him, yet he insists on disbelief with arrogance, even though arrogance does not befit a human, because greatness is only Allah’s attribute. This is just like what is stated at the beginning of Surah Al-An’am: «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ خَلَقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضَ وَ جَعَلَ الظُّلُمٰتِ وَ النُّوْرَ ثُمَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْ يَعْدِلُوْنَ » [ الأنعام : ۱ ] “All praise is due to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light, yet those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord.”
➌ { فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ اَلِيْمٍ:} Basharah means glad tidings, that is, the happy news whose effects become apparent on the face. Here, this word is used for mockery, that is, ridicule. In this verse, the mention is of a painful punishment, in the next verse a humiliating punishment, and in the verse after that a great punishment. In this verse, due to the insistence on disbelief and arrogance, the glad tidings of a painful punishment are given.
