Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 16) {يَوْمَنَبْطِشُالْبَطْشَةَالْكُبْرٰىاِنَّامُنْتَقِمُوْنَ: ’’إِنَّ‘‘} is to state the reason. That is, We removed the punishment of famine, but on the Day of Resurrection, when We seize you with the great grasp, it will never be removed, because We will be taking retribution. The worldly grasp was to bring you back from disbelief, so after that you were given the opportunity to repent, as He said: « وَلَنُذِيْقَنَّهُمْمِّنَالْعَذَابِالْاَدْنٰىدُوْنَالْعَذَابِالْاَكْبَرِلَعَلَّهُمْيَرْجِعُوْنَ»[ السجدۃ : ۲۱ ] "And surely We will make them taste a portion of the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return." But the great grasp of the Day of Resurrection will be for retribution, after which you will not be given respite. Tabari has mentioned with his chain that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: [ قَالَابْنُمَسْعُوْدٍ ’’ الْبَطْشَةَالْكُبْرٰى‘‘ يَوْمُبَدْرٍ،وَأَنَاأَقُوْلُهِيَيَوْمُالْقِيَامَةِ ][ الطبري : ۲۱ /۲۷، ح : ۳۱۳۳۸ ] "Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that {’’ الْبَطْشَةَالْكُبْرٰى‘‘} (the great grasp) is the Day of Badr, and I say that it is the Day of Resurrection." Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) has declared the chain of this statement to be Sahih. The researcher of his Tafsir, Dr. Hikmat bin Basheer, has also declared the chain of this statement to be Sahih. In reality, here the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) is stronger.
