Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

The meaning of {وَ نَادَوْا يٰمٰلِكُ لِيَقْضِ عَلَيْنَا رَبُّكَ … : ’’ قَضٰي عَلَيْهِ ‘‘} is to finish off, that is, to give death, as He said: «فَوَكَزَهٗ مُوْسٰى فَقَضٰى عَلَيْهِ» [ القصص : ۱۵ ] "So Musa struck him with his fist and finished him off." {’’مالك‘‘} is the name of the keeper (gatekeeper) angel of Hell. In the long hadith narrated from Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), it is mentioned that in a dream, Jibreel and Mikaeel (peace be upon them) showed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) many things and later explained their reality. In it, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ فَانْطَلَقْنَا فَأَتَيْنَا عَلٰی رَجُلٍ كَرِيْهِ الْمَرْآةِ كَأَكْرَهِ مَا أَنْتَ رَاءٍ رَجُلاً مَرْآةً، فَإِذَا عِنْدَهُ نَارٌ يَحُشُّهَا وَيَسْعٰي حَوْلَهَا، قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُمَا مَا هٰذَا؟ ] "Then we moved forward and reached a man who was extremely ugly in appearance, as ugly as anyone could possibly be. He had fire with him, he was kindling it and running around it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that I asked both of them: "Who is this?" At the end of the hadith, when the angel explained everything, he said: [ وَأَمَّا الرَّجُلُ الْكَرِيْهُ الْمَرْآةِ الَّذِيْ عِنْدَ النَّارِ يَحُشُّهَا وَيَسْعٰی حَوْلَهَا فَإِنَّهُ مَالِكٌ خَازِنُ جَهَنَّمَ ] [ بخاري، التعبیر، باب تعبیر الرؤیا بعد صلاۃ الصبح : ۷۰۴۷ ] "The ugly man you saw by the fire, who was kindling it and running around it, is Malik, the keeper of Hell." The disbelievers will ask the angels of Hell to pray to Allah for some reduction in their punishment. When they lose hope in this, they will call out to Malik, the keeper of Hell, to pray to his Lord to give them death. He will say, you are to remain here. In short, they will not find any way to escape this punishment. Elsewhere He said: « وَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَهُمْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ لَا يُقْضٰى عَلَيْهِمْ فَيَمُوْتُوْا وَ لَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمْ مِّنْ عَذَابِهَا كَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِيْ كُلَّ كَفُوْرٍ» [ فاطر : ۳۶ ] "And those who disbelieved, for them is the fire of Hell; neither will they be finished off so that they die, nor will any part of its punishment be lightened for them. Thus do We recompense every ungrateful one."
