It will profit you not this Day (O you who turn away from Allâh’s remembrance and His worship) as you did wrong, (and) that you will be sharers (you and your Qarîn ) in the punishment.

(Ayah 39){ وَلَنْيَّنْفَعَكُمُالْيَوْمَ … :} If a person in this world is afflicted by some calamity, he finds some consolation in the fact that he is not alone, but that there are others also afflicted by the same calamity. In addition, the feeling of companionship with friends also lessens the pain somewhat, because in adversity they help and encourage each other. There is a common saying: “All friends in Hell, all friends in Paradise”—that if we go to Hell, all friends will go together, and if we go to Paradise, we will also go together.
In relation to the companion, it is said that if you wish to find some consolation in the fact that, “I am in punishment, but my companion is also in punishment,” then your thinking is wrong. When you committed oppression in the world, today you will gain absolutely no benefit from the fact that you are sharing the punishment with each other, because the punishment is so severe that no one will care for anyone else. In fact, the criminal will wish to ransom himself from this punishment by giving up all his relatives and close ones.
