Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 36) ➊ {وَ مَنْ يَّعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمٰنِ:} Zamakhshari said, {’’عَشِيَ يَعْشٰي‘‘} (ع) when there is a defect in the sight, and {’’عَشَا يَعْشُوْ‘‘ } (ن) when one sees like a person whose sight is defective, even though there is no defect in it. The difference between the two is the same as between {’’عَمِيَ‘‘} (became blind) and {’’تَعَامٰي‘‘} (acted blind). The meaning of {’’ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمٰنِ ‘‘} is also the remembrance of the Most Merciful, the admonition that has come from Him, and this Qur’an as well. The result of being completely engrossed in the adornment and beauty of the world is that a person becomes heedless of the remembrance of Allah, due to which the angels dislike him and devils cling to him, making every effort to involve him in every evil. Allah the Exalted said: «يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تُلْهِكُمْ اَمْوَالُكُمْ وَ لَاۤ اَوْلَادُكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ وَ مَنْ يَّفْعَلْ ذٰلِكَ فَاُولٰٓىِٕكَ هُمُ الْخٰسِرُوْنَ » [ المنافقون : ۹ ] “O you who have believed! Let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whoever does so, then those are the losers.” And the person who, by controlling his desires, protects himself from the trials of the world and remains constant in the remembrance of Allah, the devil stays away from him and Allah the Exalted appoints an angel with him who helps him. Allah the Exalted has used the word “acted blind” for deliberately neglecting His remembrance, and mentioned the word {’’ الرَّحْمٰنِ ‘‘} because it does not befit a human to be heedless of the remembrance of the Most Merciful.

{ نُقَيِّضْ لَهٗ شَيْطٰنًا فَهُوَ لَهٗ قَرِيْنٌ:} For its explanation, see Surah Ha Meem As-Sajdah (25). {’’ شَيْطٰنًا ‘‘} is indefinite, meaning some devil, whether from among humans or from the progeny of Iblis. The attribution of appointing the devil has been made to Allah the Exalted, although this is the result of a person’s heedlessness of Allah’s remembrance, because Allah the Exalted is the Creator of every action and all matters return to Him, as He said: «وَ اِلَى اللّٰهِ تُرْجَعُ الْاُمُوْرُ» [ البقرۃ : ۲۱۰ ] “And all matters are returned to Allah.”
