Surah Ash-Shura (42) — Ayah 44

وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن وَلِىٍّ مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ ۗ وَتَرَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ لَمَّا رَأَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ يَقُولُونَ هَلْ إِلَىٰ مَرَدٍّ مِّن سَبِيلٍ ﴿44﴾
And whomsoever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no Walî (protector, helper, guardian) after Him. And you will see the Zâlimûn (polytheists, wrong-doers, oppressors): when they behold the torment, they will say: "Is there any way of return (to the world)?"
وَمَن waman And whoever
يُضْلِلِ yuḍ'lili Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah lets go astray
فَمَا famā then not
لَهُۥ lahu for him
مِن min any
وَلِىٍّۢ waliyyin protector
مِّنۢ min after Him
بَعْدِهِۦ ۗ baʿdihi after Him
وَتَرَى watarā And you will see
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers
لَمَّا lammā when
رَأَوُا۟ ra-awū they see
ٱلْعَذَابَ l-ʿadhāba the punishment
يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna saying
هَلْ hal Is
إِلَىٰ ilā (there) for
مَرَدٍّۢ maraddin return
مِّن min any
سَبِيلٍۢ sabīlin way

(Ayah 44) ➊ { وَ مَنْ يُّضْلِلِ اللّٰهُ فَمَا لَهٗ مِنْ وَّلِيٍّ مِّنْۢ بَعْدِهٖ:} That is, the person whose stubbornness and obstinacy are such that he neither has the courage to adopt the highest level of forgiveness and forbearance, nor is he willing to at least act with justice and fairness, it is clear that he is deprived of goodness and is purely evil. Allah Almighty does not grant such a person the ability to do good, rather He pushes him into misguidance, and whomever Allah leads astray, then there is no helper for him who can bring him to guidance. { وَ تَرَى الظّٰلِمِيْنَ:} And you will see those wrongdoers who, before seeing the punishment, were in no way willing to refrain from oppression, corruption, and rebellion in the land, so these wrongdoers neither feared the grip of their Lord nor had any fear of reckoning. By {’’ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ ‘‘} is meant here the disbelievers and polytheists, because in the terminology of the Quran, this word is used for them. Here, one evidence is that further regarding them it is said: « اَلَاۤ اِنَّ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ فِيْ عَذَابٍ مُّقِيْمٍ » [ الشورٰی : ۴۵ ] "Behold! Surely the wrongdoers will be in everlasting punishment." And it is established that eternal punishment will only be for the disbelievers and polytheists. The second evidence is that in contrast to their statement, the statement of the believers is mentioned: « وَ قَالَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْۤا اِنَّ الْخٰسِرِيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ خَسِرُوْۤا اَنْفُسَهُمْ وَ اَهْلِيْهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ» [ الشورٰی : ۴۵ ] "And those who believed will say, 'Indeed, the real losers are those who lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection.'"

{ لَمَّا رَاَوُا الْعَذَابَ يَقُوْلُوْنَ … :} Those same arrogant and wrongdoers who previously neither feared the Lord Almighty nor feared His punishment or reckoning, when they see the punishment, all their arrogance will vanish and they will say, "Is there any way to return so that we may go back to the world and make up for our shortcomings?"
