And those who dispute (polytheists with Our Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) as regards Our Ayât (proofs, signs, verses, etc. of Islâmic Monotheism) may know that there is no place of refuge for them (from Allâh’s punishment) [Tafsir At-Tabari].

(Ayah 35) {وَيَعْلَمَالَّذِيْنَيُجَادِلُوْنَفِيْۤاٰيٰتِنَا … :} Here the question is why {’’ يَعْلَمَ ‘‘} is in the accusative case and to what is it being conjoined with the "waw" (and)? The answer is that this sentence is being conjoined to an omitted sentence in which the reason is mentioned as to why the winds are sometimes favorable for ships, sometimes extremely adverse, and sometimes still; and the accusative case of {’’ يَعْلَمَ ‘‘} is due to {’’لَامِكَيْ‘‘}, after which {’’أَنْ‘‘} the subjunctive particle is implied. Thus, the entire phrase is as follows: {’’ اَللّٰهُفَعَلَذٰلِكَلِيَعْتَبِرَالْمُؤْمِنُوْنَوَلِيَعْلَمَالَّذِيْنَيُجَادِلُوْنَفِيْآيَاتِنَا ‘‘} That is, Allah Almighty mentioned the matter of ships and winds so that the believers may take heed from it, and those who dispute Our signs to deny them may know that there is no place for them to escape from Allah. Perhaps after knowing this, they may come to believe in Allah’s signs. Some commentators have mentioned different words for the omitted sentence, but the purpose of all is the same: that in {’’ وَيَعْلَمَالَّذِيْنَيُجَادِلُوْنَفِيْۤاٰيٰتِنَا ‘‘} the reason for the previous matters is being stated. There are several examples in the Qur’an of omitting the causative sentence, as He said: «وَلِنَجْعَلَهٗۤاٰيَةًلِّلنَّاسِ »[ مریم : ۲۱ ] “And so that We may make him a very great sign for the people.” And as He said: «وَخَلَقَاللّٰهُالسَّمٰوٰتِوَالْاَرْضَبِالْحَقِّوَلِتُجْزٰىكُلُّنَفْسٍۭبِمَاكَسَبَتْ »[ الجاثیۃ : ۲۲ ] “And Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth, and so that every soul may be recompensed for what it has earned.”
