Surah Fussilat (41) — Ayah 50

وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَـٰهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ هَـٰذَا لِى وَمَآ أَظُنُّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ قَآئِمَةً وَلَئِن رُّجِعْتُ إِلَىٰ رَبِّىٓ إِنَّ لِى عِندَهُۥ لَلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ ﴿50﴾
And truly, if We give him a taste of mercy from Us, after some adversity (severe poverty or disease, etc.) has touched him, he is sure to say: "This is due to my (merit); I think not that the Hour will be established. But if I am brought back to my Lord, surely, there will be for me the best (wealth) with Him. Then, We verily, will show to the disbelievers what they have done, and We shall make them taste a severe torment.
وَلَئِنْ wala-in And verily, if
أَذَقْنَـٰهُ adhaqnāhu We let him taste
رَحْمَةًۭ raḥmatan mercy
مِّنَّا minnā from Us
مِنۢ min after
بَعْدِ baʿdi after
ضَرَّآءَ ḍarrāa an adversity
مَسَّتْهُ massathu (has) touched him
لَيَقُولَنَّ layaqūlanna he will surely say
هَـٰذَا hādhā This (is)
لِى (due) to me
وَمَآ wamā and not
أَظُنُّ aẓunnu I think
ٱلسَّاعَةَ l-sāʿata the Hour
قَآئِمَةًۭ qāimatan (will be) established
وَلَئِن wala-in and if
رُّجِعْتُ rujiʿ'tu I am returned
إِلَىٰ ilā to
رَبِّىٓ rabbī my Lord
إِنَّ inna indeed
لِى for me
عِندَهُۥ ʿindahu with Him
لَلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ lalḥus'nā (will be) the best
فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّ falanunabbi-anna But We will surely inform
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieved
بِمَا bimā about what
عَمِلُوا۟ ʿamilū they did
وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم walanudhīqannahum and We will surely make them taste
مِّنْ min of
عَذَابٍ ʿadhābin a punishment
غَلِيظٍۢ ghalīẓin severe

(Ayah 50) ➊ { وَ لَىِٕنْ اَذَقْنٰهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا … :} That is, on one hand, there is such despair that as soon as evil touches him, he becomes utterly hopeless; on the other hand, there is such ingratitude that as soon as he tastes some mercy after affliction, he becomes puffed up and becomes indifferent to Allah, even though neither that evil and affliction was permanent nor is this worldly blessing everlasting. Moreover, this blessing is not the result of his own effort that he should become proud of it; rather, it is purely Our gift. { لَيَقُوْلَنَّ هٰذَا لِيْ:} That is, as soon as a disbeliever tastes a worldly blessing, he will utter three statements of disbelief; these will be in his heart and he will also say them with his tongue. The first is that this blessing is the result of his own struggle and is his right, just as the people of Pharaoh said (see Al-A'raf: 130, 131) and as Qarun said (see Al-Qasas: 78), even though this is clear ingratitude and denial of Allah's favor.

{ وَ مَاۤ اَظُنُّ السَّاعَةَ قَآىِٕمَةً وَّ لَىِٕنْ رُّجِعْتُ اِلٰى رَبِّيْۤ اِنَّ لِيْ عِنْدَهٗ لَلْحُسْنٰى:} The details of these two statements have already been mentioned in the exegesis of Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah (36).
