Surah Fussilat (41) — Ayah 39

وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ أَنَّكَ تَرَى ٱلْأَرْضَ خَـٰشِعَةً فَإِذَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا ٱلْمَآءَ ٱهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَحْيَاهَا لَمُحْىِ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴿39﴾
And among His Signs (in this), that you see the earth barren; but when We send down water (rain) to it, it is stirred to life and growth (of vegetations). Verily, He Who gives it life, surely, is Able to give life to the dead (on the Day of Resurrection). Indeed He is Able to do all things.
وَمِنْ wamin And among
ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ āyātihi His Signs
أَنَّكَ annaka (is) that you
تَرَى tarā see
ٱلْأَرْضَ l-arḍa the earth
خَـٰشِعَةًۭ khāshiʿatan barren
فَإِذَآ fa-idhā but when
أَنزَلْنَا anzalnā We send down
عَلَيْهَا ʿalayhā upon it
ٱلْمَآءَ l-māa water
ٱهْتَزَّتْ ih'tazzat it is stirred (to life)
وَرَبَتْ ۚ warabat and grows
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلَّذِىٓ alladhī the One Who
أَحْيَاهَا aḥyāhā gives it life
لَمُحْىِ lamuḥ'yī (is) surely the Giver of life
ٱلْمَوْتَىٰٓ ۚ l-mawtā (to) the dead
إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, He
عَلَىٰ ʿalā (is) on
كُلِّ kulli every
شَىْءٍۢ shayin thing
قَدِيرٌ qadīrun All-Powerful

(Ayah 39) {وَ مِنْ اٰيٰتِهٖۤ اَنَّكَ تَرَى الْاَرْضَ خَاشِعَةً … :} For the explanation of this verse, see Surah An-Nahl (65) and Surah Al-Hajj (5 to 7). Here, for barren land, the word {’’ خَاشِعَةً ‘‘} (subdued, humbled) is used, because the matter is about prostration to Allah alone, that is, about humility, whereas in Surah Al-Hajj, for the same barren land, the word {’’ هَامِدَةً ‘‘} (dead) is used, because there the matter is about life after death.
