سُوْرَةُ فُصِّلَتۡ
Surah Fussilat (41) — Ayah 27
فَلَنُذِيقَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَسْوَأَ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿27﴾

But surely, We shall cause those who disbelieve to taste a severe torment, and certainly, We shall requite them the worst of what they used to do.

(Ayah 27) ➊ {فَلَنُذِيْقَنَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا عَذَابًا شَدِيْدًا:} Since this was their clear wrongdoing and stubbornness, and there was no hope for their guidance, therefore, apart from a lesson-giving punishment and torment, there was no other recompense for them. The فاء in {’’ فَلَنُذِيْقَنَّ ‘‘} is for reasoning, meaning that because they prevented (others) from listening to the Qur’an, We will make them taste a severe punishment.
➋ Instead of saying { ’’فَلَنُعَذِّبَنَّ‘‘} (We will surely punish them), the word {’’ فَلَنُذِيْقَنَّ ‘‘} (We will surely make them taste) is used, because that which is tasted only touches the tongue a little, so if even a little touch is so severe, then how severe will the entire punishment be.
➌ { وَ لَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ اَسْوَاَ الَّذِيْ كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ:} Although the disbelievers may have committed countless sins, such as theft, adultery, etc., but their worst deeds were disbelief, polytheism, and preventing others from faith. Thus, the punishment they will receive will be according to the scale of disbelief, polytheism, and preventing from faith, in comparison to which the punishment for other sins will be insignificant.
