Surah Fussilat (41) — Ayah 25

۞ وَقَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَآءَ فَزَيَّنُوا۟ لَهُم مَّا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَحَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَوْلُ فِىٓ أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ خَـٰسِرِينَ ﴿25﴾
And We have assigned for them (devils) intimate companions (in this world), who have made fair-seeming to them, what was before them (evil deeds which they were doing in the present worldly life and disbelief in the Reckoning and the Resurrection) and what was behind them (denial of the matters in the coming life of the Hereafter as regards punishment or reward). And the Word (i.e. the torment) is justified against them as it was justified against those who were among the previous generations of jinn and men that had passed away before them. Indeed they (all) were the losers.
۞ وَقَيَّضْنَا waqayyaḍnā And We have destined
لَهُمْ lahum for them
قُرَنَآءَ quranāa companions
فَزَيَّنُوا۟ fazayyanū (who) made fair-seeming
لَهُم lahum to them
مَّا what
بَيْنَ bayna (was) before them
أَيْدِيهِمْ aydīhim (was) before them
وَمَا wamā and what
خَلْفَهُمْ khalfahum (was) behind them
وَحَقَّ waḥaqqa and (is) justified
عَلَيْهِمُ ʿalayhimu against them
ٱلْقَوْلُ l-qawlu the Word
فِىٓ among
أُمَمٍۢ umamin nations
قَدْ qad (that have) passed away
خَلَتْ khalat (that have) passed away
مِن min before them
قَبْلِهِم qablihim before them
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلْجِنِّ l-jini the jinn
وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ wal-insi and the men
إِنَّهُمْ innahum Indeed, they
كَانُوا۟ kānū were
خَـٰسِرِينَ khāsirīna losers

(Ayah 25) ➊ {وَ قَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَآءَ …:’’ قُرَنَآءَ ‘‘ ’’قَرِيْنٌ‘‘} is the plural of 'qareen', a companion. {’’اَلْقَيْضُ‘‘} refers to the eggshell. That is, just as the shell is attached to the egg, in the same way, We have attached such evil people to these polytheists who cling to them just as the eggshell clings to the egg. This is the way of Allah that if a person is evil, he is provided with evil companions, who keep showing him green gardens. The result is that the person becomes engrossed in evils and ultimately drowns himself along with his companions. See also Surah Az-Zukhruf (36) and Surah Qaf (23 to 29).
{ فَزَيَّنُوْا لَهُمْ مَّا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْهِمْ … : ’’ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْهِمْ ‘‘} refers to the deeds they were doing in the world, and {’’ وَ مَا خَلْفَهُمْ ‘‘} refers to the evil deeds they had done before. That is, those evil companions keep making all their present and past evil deeds appear attractive to them, as a result of which they persist in them and become among those people about whom, due to their evil deeds, this statement of Allah applies: « لَاَمْلَـَٔنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَ النَّاسِ اَجْمَعِيْنَ » [ ہود : ۱۱۹ ] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and mankind all together."
Some commentators have taken {’’ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْهِمْ ‘‘} to mean the world and {’’ وَ مَا خَلْفَهُمْ ‘‘} to mean the Hereafter. That is, their evil companions also keep them in delusion regarding the Hereafter, saying that firstly, it will not happen at all, and even if it does, just as Allah has blessed you with bounties in the world, He will bless you there as well.
