Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
The Day when their excuses will be of no profit to Zâlimûn (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh). Theirs will be the curse, and theirs will be the evil abode (i.e. painful torment in Hell-fire).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 52) ➊ By { يَوْمَلَايَنْفَعُالظّٰلِمِيْنَمَعْذِرَتُهُمْ: ’’ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ ‘‘} is meant the polytheists. (See Al-An'am: 82) Their excuse will not benefit them because they will not have any authentic excuse at all. Due to the messengers delivering the message, they will not be able to claim ignorance as an excuse. On that day, their excuse will either be a blatant lie, that they will say: « وَاللّٰهِرَبِّنَامَاكُنَّامُشْرِكِيْنَ »[الأنعام : ۲۳ ] "By Allah, our Lord! We were not polytheists." Or, by making fate an excuse, they will try to prove themselves blameless, as in Surah Al-Mu’minun their statement is: « رَبَّنَاغَلَبَتْعَلَيْنَاشِقْوَتُنَا »[ المؤمنون : ۱۰۶ ] "Our Lord! Our misery overcame us." Obviously, none of these excuses are worthy of being heard, let alone being of any benefit.
➋ By bringing {وَلَهُمُاللَّعْنَةُوَلَهُمْسُوْٓءُالدَّارِ: ’’ لَهُمْ ‘‘} first, the meaning of exclusivity is created, therefore it is translated: "And for them alone is the curse, and for them alone is the worst abode." This is the result of Allah’s help, that Allah’s messengers and the believers will be safe from both the curse and the worst abode on that day.
