Surah Ghafir (40) — Ayah 40

مَنْ عَمِلَ سَيِّئَةً فَلَا يُجْزَىٰٓ إِلَّا مِثْلَهَا ۖ وَمَنْ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ يُرْزَقُونَ فِيهَا بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ﴿40﴾
"Whosoever does an evil deed, will not be requited except the like thereof; and whosoever does a righteous deed, whether male or female and is a true believer (in the Oneness of Allâh), such will enter Paradise, where they will be provided therein (with all things in abundance) without limit.
مَنْ man Whoever
عَمِلَ ʿamila does
سَيِّئَةًۭ sayyi-atan an evil
فَلَا falā then not
يُجْزَىٰٓ yuj'zā he will be recompensed
إِلَّا illā but
مِثْلَهَا ۖ mith'lahā (the) like thereof
وَمَنْ waman and whoever
عَمِلَ ʿamila does
صَـٰلِحًۭا ṣāliḥan righteous (deeds)
مِّن min of
ذَكَرٍ dhakarin male
أَوْ aw or
أُنثَىٰ unthā female
وَهُوَ wahuwa while he
مُؤْمِنٌۭ mu'minun (is) a believer
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those
يَدْخُلُونَ yadkhulūna will enter
ٱلْجَنَّةَ l-janata Paradise
يُرْزَقُونَ yur'zaqūna they will be given provision
فِيهَا fīhā in it
بِغَيْرِ bighayri without
حِسَابٍۢ ḥisābin account

(Ayah 40) {مَنْ عَمِلَ سَيِّئَةً فَلَا يُجْزٰۤى اِلَّا مِثْلَهَا …:} This world is a place of trial, yet the Most Merciful and Compassionate Lord has granted such a tremendous concession that whoever commits an evil deed will be recompensed only for that one evil, but whoever believes and does righteous deeds—such people will enter Paradise and will be given sustenance therein without measure. They will be rewarded for their good deeds tenfold, up to seven hundred times, or even beyond calculation. From this, it is understood that the recompense for evil will be exactly as much as the evil committed, and that a disbeliever will never enter Paradise, because even if he thinks he has done some good, it will not be considered valid without faith. For the acceptance of righteous deeds, faith is a condition, and a righteous deed is one in which the intention is correct, meaning it is done purely for Allah, and the method is correct, meaning it is done according to the way prescribed by Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
