Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
There is certainly among you he who would linger behind (from fighting in Allâh’s Cause). If a misfortune befalls you, he says, "Indeed Allâh has favoured me in that I was not present among them."

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 73,72) This mentions the behavior of hypocrites among the Muslims, that is, some of them deliberately and with various excuses delay going out for jihad and try to stay behind. Then, if the Muslims face any hardship during this journey of jihad, they become very happy and say that thanks to Allah, I stayed behind, otherwise I would have had to endure the same suffering that the other Muslims endured. And if the Muslims attain victory and happiness and gain spoils of war, they say with regret that if we had also been among them, our work would have been accomplished as well. They say this in such a manner as if they never had any connection with the Muslims in the first place. In both these situations, they are only concerned with worldly hardship and worldly benefits; they never care about the Hereafter or the pleasure of Allah, and this is the proof of their hypocrisy and their lack of faith in Allah and the Hereafter.
