Surah An-Nisaa (4) — Ayah 57

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَنُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۖ لَّهُمْ فِيهَآ أَزْوَٰجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ ۖ وَنُدْخِلُهُمْ ظِلًّا ظَلِيلًا ﴿57﴾
But those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and do deeds of righteousness, We shall admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), abiding therein forever. Therein they shall have Azwâjun Mutahharatun (purified mates or wives), and We shall admit them to shades wide and ever deepening (Paradise).
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believe[d]
وَعَمِلُوا۟ waʿamilū and did
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ l-ṣāliḥāti the good deeds
سَنُدْخِلُهُمْ sanud'khiluhum We will admit them
جَنَّـٰتٍۢ jannātin (in) Gardens
تَجْرِى tajrī flows
مِن min from
تَحْتِهَا taḥtihā underneath it
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ l-anhāru the rivers
خَـٰلِدِينَ khālidīna will abide
فِيهَآ fīhā in it
أَبَدًۭا ۖ abadan forever
لَّهُمْ lahum For them
فِيهَآ fīhā in it
أَزْوَٰجٌۭ azwājun (are) spouses
مُّطَهَّرَةٌۭ ۖ muṭahharatun pure
وَنُدْخِلُهُمْ wanud'khiluhum and We will admit them
ظِلًّۭا ẓillan (in the) shade
ظَلِيلًا ẓalīlan thick

(Ayah 57) ➊ {وَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ …: } In the Noble Qur’an, promise and warning are generally mentioned together, and due to this style, the Qur’an has been called {”كِتٰبًا مُّتَشَابِهًا“}, and this is the most effective method of admonition and reminder. Some have understood from this verse that righteous deeds are something separate from faith, because both are mentioned together with conjunction, but in numerous verses the Qur’an has mentioned righteous deeds separately with conjunction to emphasize their importance, otherwise they are included in faith. For { ”اَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ“ }, see the last part of Surah Ar-Rahman and the commentary of verse (25) of Surah Al-Baqarah.

{ وَ نُدْخِلُهُمْ ظِلًّا ظَلِيْلًا:} This same shade is called { ”ظِلٍّ مَّمْدُوْدٍ“ } in another verse. (See Surah Al-Waqi‘ah: 27 to 30) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “In Paradise, there is a tree under whose shade a rider could travel for a hundred years and still not cross it.” [ بخاری، بدء الخلق، باب ما جاء فی صفۃ الجنۃ… : ۳۲۵۱، عن أبی ہریرۃ رضی اللہ عنہ ] In one hadith, the name of this tree is mentioned as “Shajarat al-Khuld.” [ أحمد : 455/2 ح : ۹۸۸۳ ]
