وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا۟ فِى حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِّثْلُهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ جَامِعُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ فِى جَهَنَّمَ جَمِيعًا ﴿140﴾
And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’ân) that when you hear the Verses of Allâh being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allâh will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell.
وَقَدْ waqad And surely
نَزَّلَ nazzala He has revealed
عَلَيْكُمْ ʿalaykum to you
فِى in
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ l-kitābi the Book
أَنْ an that
إِذَا idhā when
سَمِعْتُمْ samiʿ'tum you hear
ءَايَـٰتِ āyāti (the) Verses
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
يُكْفَرُ yuk'faru being rejected
بِهَا bihā [it]
وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ wayus'tahza-u and ridiculed
بِهَا bihā at [it]
فَلَا falā then do not
تَقْعُدُوا۟ taqʿudū sit
مَعَهُمْ maʿahum with them
حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until
يَخُوضُوا۟ yakhūḍū they engage
فِى in
حَدِيثٍ ḥadīthin a conversation
غَيْرِهِۦٓ ۚ ghayrihi other than that
إِنَّكُمْ innakum Indeed, you
إِذًۭا idhan then
مِّثْلُهُمْ ۗ mith'luhum (would be) like them
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
جَامِعُ jāmiʿu will gather
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites
وَٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ wal-kāfirīna and the disbelievers
فِى in
جَهَنَّمَ jahannama Hell
جَمِيعًا jamīʿan all together

(Ayah 140) {وَ قَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتٰبِ … :} This command had already been revealed earlier in Surah Al-An'am (6:68), thus it is stated: «وَ اِذَا رَاَيْتَ الَّذِيْنَ يَخُوْضُوْنَ فِيْۤ اٰيٰتِنَا فَاَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتّٰى يَخُوْضُوْا فِيْ حَدِيْثٍ غَيْرِهٖ وَ اِمَّا يُنْسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطٰنُ فَلَا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرٰى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ» [ الأنعام : ۶۸ ] "And when you see those who engage in (vain) discussion about Our verses, then turn away from them until they engage in some other topic. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then after remembering, do not sit with such wrongdoers." In the hadith, it is also forbidden to sit in a gathering where there is open disobedience to Allah's command, as it is stated: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not sit at a table where wine is being circulated." [ أحمد: 20/1، ح : ۱۲۶ ، و حسنہ الألبانی فی غایۃ المرام ] Despite such clear commands, it was the habit of the hypocrites to leave the gatherings of Muslims and join the gatherings of Jews and polytheists where the verses of Allah were mocked. The verse under commentary refers to this very practice of theirs. However, the verse is general, and it is forbidden to participate in any gathering where the Quran and Sunnah are mocked, whether it is the gathering of disbelievers and polytheists or of the people of innovation and the sinful and wicked. When one cannot stop evil with his hand, nor with his tongue, then to silently sit and listen, and not even dislike it in the heart, is contrary even to the weakest level of faith. Rather, it is stated: "You will then be like them." That is why Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Whoever hears the faults of his religion in a gathering, and then continues to sit among them, even if he does not say anything himself, he is a hypocrite."
