Verily, those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe (again), and (again) disbelieve, and go on increasing in disbelief; Allâh will not forgive them, nor guide them on the (Right) Way.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. (Ayah 137) {اِنَّالَّذِيْنَاٰمَنُوْاثُمَّكَفَرُوْا … : } By these people are meant the hypocrites who became Muslims, but whenever they saw any benefit, they would incline towards faith, and if any hardship befell them, they would become disbelievers. These people were also from the polytheists of Aws and Khazraj, and from the Jews of Madinah. Even now, countless Muslims are in the same state. It is said: «{ وَمِنَالنَّاسِمَنْيَّعْبُدُاللّٰهَعَلٰىحَرْفٍ }»[ الحج : ۱۱ ] "And among the people is he who worships Allah on the edge." Then, "increased in disbelief" means that they remained firm upon disbelief and died upon it, because this is the degree of disbelief for which there is no forgiveness. However, if a person repents and brings faith, all his sins are forgiven. Here, the discussion is about those people who accepted faith, then abandoned it, then accepted it again, then abandoned it and adopted misguidance, and then continued to increase in misguidance, until they died in a state of disbelief. After death, the repentance of such people is not accepted; Allah will not forgive them, because after reaching this state, there is no way out for them, nor can they find any way out. These very people are mentioned in Surah Al-Imran (72), Surah Al-Munafiqun (3), and Surah An-Nisa (18).
