Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), as it was to those (Allâh’s Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allâh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers."

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 65) ➊ { وَلَقَدْاُوْحِيَاِلَيْكَ … :} Sulaiman Al-Jamal said: In {’’ وَلَقَدْ ‘‘} and {’’ لَىِٕنْاَشْرَكْتَ ‘‘}, after the "lam" there is an implied oath, meaning Allah Almighty has said this with an oath and with great emphasis. {’’ لَىِٕنْاَشْرَكْتَ ‘‘} (If you commit shirk), the addressee is the Prophet (peace be upon him) as well as every prophet from among the previous prophets. That is, revelation was sent to you and to each prophet before you, addressing them, that if you commit shirk, then whatever good deed you may have done will surely be wasted, and you will surely be among the losers. See also Surah Al-An'am (88).
➋ Here is a question: Allah Almighty knew that no prophet would commit shirk, so what is the purpose of revealing this to them? The answer is that the intent is to express the severity and evil of shirk, that if, hypothetically, even such close servants of Allah were to commit shirk, their deeds would be wasted—so what status do other people have? In other words, by addressing the prophets, their nations are being warned.
➌ This warning of all deeds being wasted along with shirk is for those whose death occurs in a state of disbelief and shirk, as He said: « وَمَنْيَّرْتَدِدْمِنْكُمْعَنْدِيْنِهٖفَيَمُتْوَهُوَكَافِرٌفَاُولٰٓىِٕكَحَبِطَتْاَعْمَالُهُمْفِيالدُّنْيَاوَالْاٰخِرَةِ »[البقرۃ : ۲۱۷ ] "And whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies while he is a disbeliever—then those are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter." Those who repent are exempt from this. See Surah Al-Furqan (68 to 70).
