وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿71﴾
And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them;
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And verily
ضَلَّ ḍalla went astray
قَبْلَهُمْ qablahum before them
أَكْثَرُ aktharu most
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former (people)

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 71) ➊ {وَ لَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ اَكْثَرُ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ :} In this verse, comfort has been given to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the callers to truth that they should not be overly distressed at their not believing; most people before them also went astray. If these people are misguided, it is nothing surprising.
➋ From this it is understood that a group following the truth has always existed, even though the majority have been among the misguided.
