Surah As-Saaffaat (37) — Ayah 58
أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ ﴿58﴾

(The dwellers of Paradise will say) "Are we then not to die (any more)?

(Ayah 59,58) {اَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِيْنَ … :} There are two interpretations of these verses. One is that the believer will say this to his disbelieving friend who used to deny the Resurrection and used to say in the world: «اِنْ هِيَ اِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا الْاُوْلٰى وَ مَا نَحْنُ بِمُنْشَرِيْنَ » [ الدخان : ۳۵ ] "There is nothing but our first death, and we shall never be raised again." The believer will address him and say, now look! Was your statement correct or wrong that: « اَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِيْنَ (58) اِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْاُوْلٰى وَ مَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِيْنَ» "So are we never to die except our first death, and are we never to be punished?" That is, now that you have fallen into the midst of the Fire, it has become clear to you that your statement was wrong?
The second interpretation is that the believer's address to his disbelieving companion from the world ended at the previous verse {’’ لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِيْنَ ‘‘}, after which, upon seeing the blessings granted in Paradise and knowing that he will now remain in Paradise forever, with no more death and no expulsion from here, he will say with happiness and amazement to his companions in Paradise: Is it really so that after the first death which has already occurred, we will never die again, nor will we ever be punished, but rather we will always remain alive and stay in Paradise? Although most commentators have given the second interpretation, the first interpretation is more apparent.
