سُوْرَةُ يٰسٓ
Surah Yaseen (36) — Ayah 45
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ ﴿45﴾
Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And when it is said to them: "Fear of that which is before you (worldly torments), and that which is behind you (torments in the Hereafter), in order that you may receive Mercy (i.e. if you believe in Allâh’s religion - Islâmic Monotheism, and avoid polytheism, and obey Allâh with righteous deeds)."

(Ayah 45) {وَ اِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمُ اتَّقُوْا مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْكُمْ … :} After mentioning the signs and evidences of monotheism and the Hereafter spread throughout the universe, from which the polytheists have closed their eyes, now the treatment of those who give advice is mentioned. The summary of which is that they have also closed their ears to every word of goodwill. {’’ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْكُمْ ‘‘} refers to previous sins and {’’ وَ مَا خَلْفَكُمْ ‘‘} refers to later sins, or {’’ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْكُمْ ‘‘} refers to the punishment of this world and {’’ وَ مَا خَلْفَكُمْ ‘‘} refers to the punishment of the Hereafter. That is, when they are told to refrain from those sins which they have already committed, to be remorseful for them, to repent from them, and to avoid them in the future, or when they are told to save themselves from that punishment which may come upon them in this world as a result of their sins and also from that which is coming in the Hereafter, so that mercy may be shown to them. The answer to this sentence is {’’أَعْرَضُوْا عَنْهُ‘‘} meaning they turn away from this advice, but here this answer has been omitted, because it is automatically understood from the next verse.
