وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ ﴿2﴾

(Ayah 2) {وَ الْقُرْاٰنِ الْحَكِيْمِ:} The purpose of an oath is to instill certainty regarding that for which the oath is taken, and the oath serves as evidence for what is to come after it as its response. Then, sometimes the greatness of that by which the oath is taken itself is presented as testimony for the response to the oath, for example, "By Allah," and sometimes the meaning of the oath serves as evidence for the response to the oath and bears witness to its truthfulness. One meaning of {’’ الْحَكِيْمِ ‘‘} is that this Quran is full of wisdom and prudence; nothing in it is erroneous, irrational, or inferior, rather every statement is based on perfect intellect and wisdom. Another meaning is that this Quran is extremely firm and strong; there is no internal contradiction in its verses.

Here, Allah Almighty, addressing the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), swears by the Quran al-Hakim and states three things: first, that indeed you are among the messengers who have been sent from Us; second, that indeed you are upon the straight path; and third, that this is a revelation from the Mighty, the Merciful. The connection between the oath and its response is absolutely clear: even if there were no other evidence for your prophethood and the other two matters, this Quran alone is sufficient as proof for them. The meaning is that this Quran, full of wisdom and perfect in every respect, is a witness that indeed you are Allah’s Messenger, you are upon the straight path, and this Quran is revealed from Allah Almighty, Who is Mighty and Merciful. Because you (peace be upon him) were unlettered, neither knowing how to write nor read, nor had you ever studied under anyone, nor had you ever, before prophethood, presented any such or similar speech from which it could be suspected that this eloquence developed gradually to this level. All these things were well known to the disbelievers of Makkah, for they personally knew you for forty years. Then, after forty years, for such speech to suddenly flow from your tongue, which rendered all the eloquent and articulate people of Arabia helpless and speechless, and despite repeated challenges, they were unable to produce anything like it. From this, three things are proven: first, that this magnificent, wise speech is not your own, but rather the speech of someone else who has sent you; second, that the sender is not any creature, but the Creator of the universe Himself, Who is Mighty and Merciful, because if it were the speech of anyone else, he could have produced more like it, whereas the entire universe combined is unable to produce even a single surah like it; and third, that since you are sent by Allah, then surely the path you are upon is the straight path. In this, the greatness and loftiness of the Quran is also expressed, as an oath is being sworn by it.
