Surah Faatir (35) — Ayah 5

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْغَرُورُ ﴿5﴾
O mankind! Verily, the Promise of Allâh is true. So let not this present life deceive you, and let not the chief deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allâh.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O
ٱلنَّاسُ l-nāsu mankind
إِنَّ inna Indeed
وَعْدَ waʿda (the) promise
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
حَقٌّۭ ۖ ḥaqqun (is) true
فَلَا falā So (let) not
تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ taghurrannakumu deceive you
ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ l-ḥayatu the life
ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ l-dun'yā (of) the world
وَلَا walā and (let) not
يَغُرَّنَّكُم yaghurrannakum deceive you
بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi about Allah
ٱلْغَرُورُ l-gharūru the Deceiver

(Ayah 5) ➊ { يٰۤاَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اِنَّ وَعْدَ اللّٰهِ حَقٌّ :} The promise refers to the promise of the Hereafter, which is mentioned in the last sentence of the previous verse, that all matters will be presented before Allah.
{ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الْحَيٰوةُ الدُّنْيَا :} That is, Allah’s promise is certainly true that you will be presented before Him, so let not the life of this world with its pleasures and allurements deceive you into thinking that this is the only life, because this world has kept many people in this deception and destroyed them. See Surah Al-An’am (29), Al-Mu’minun (37), and Surah Al-Jathiyah (24). {’’ الدُّنْيَا ‘‘ ’’اَلْأَدْنٰي‘‘} is the feminine form, the near life which is near compared to the Hereafter, or the lowly and insignificant life, as {’’دَنِئٌ‘‘} means insignificant. The purpose is to draw attention to the insignificance of the worldly life and to emphasize being cautious of it.
{ وَ لَا يَغُرَّنَّكُمْ بِاللّٰهِ الْغَرُوْرُ:’’ الْغَرُوْرُ ‘‘} With a dammah on the ghayn, {’’غَرَّ يَغُرُّ‘‘} (n) is the verbal noun, meaning to deceive, and with a fathah on the ghayn, it is an adjective of resemblance, which also has the meaning of exaggeration, i.e., one who deceives greatly. The definite article in it is for specification, that deceiver whom you also know, i.e., Satan, whose clarification is coming in the next verse, just as {’’شُكُوْرٌ‘‘} (with a dammah on the sheen) means to give thanks, and {’’شَكُوْرٌ‘‘} (with a fathah on the sheen) means one who gives much thanks.
➍ Satan deceives about Allah in many ways: he deceives some by making them believe that Allah does not exist at all, that this universe is running on its own. He puts some in the misunderstanding that there are other deities besides Allah who have the power to benefit or harm. He commands some to commit sins and then repent, and deceives some in the name of Allah’s mercy, saying that Allah is very Forgiving and Merciful, commit as many sins as you want, He will forgive, and he deceives most with “procrastination.” The meaning of procrastination is {’’سَوْفَ أَفْعَلُ‘‘} that I will do good deeds, what’s the hurry, there is still plenty of time, he keeps a person in this deception until the opportunity for action is gone.
