Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 6) ➊ In {وَيَرَىالَّذِيْنَاُوْتُواالْعِلْمَ … : ’’ يَرَى ‘‘}, by “seeing” (ru’yat) is meant seeing with the heart, that is, knowing. The first object of {’’ يَرَىالَّذِيْنَاُوْتُواالْعِلْمَ ‘‘} is {’’ الَّذِيْۤاُنْزِلَاِلَيْكَمِنْرَّبِّكَ ‘‘} and the second object is {’’ الْحَقَّ ‘‘}. {’’ هُوَ ‘‘} is a separating pronoun (dameer fasl). Because of the definite article on the predicate {’’ الْحَقَّ ‘‘} and the separating pronoun, exclusivity and emphasis have been created in the statement, that is why it has been translated as “it alone is the truth.” By {’’ الَّذِيْنَاُوْتُواالْعِلْمَ ‘‘} is meant first and foremost the Companions, then all Muslims who have been blessed with thought, understanding, and beneficial knowledge, or those among the People of the Book who believed, such as Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him). In this verse and the next, the certainty and faith of the people of knowledge and understanding regarding the Messenger, divine revelation, and the Day of Judgment, and the belief and declaration of the disbelievers, have been mentioned. Thus, it is said that those who have been given knowledge know and are certain that what has been revealed to you is the truth and it guides to the path of that Pure Being who is dominant over all and the Owner of all excellences. No matter how much the disbelievers and Satan try, because of their certainty in His being dominant over all and the Owner of all excellences, they are not ready to follow any path other than His. Therefore, according to His guidance, they believe in the establishment of the Day of Judgment and prepare for it. ➋ Some commentators have mentioned the conjunction of {’’ وَيَرَىالَّذِيْنَ ‘‘} with {’’ لِيَجْزِيَالَّذِيْنَاٰمَنُوْا ‘‘}, but it is better to consider it as a new statement.
