And those before them belied; these have not received even a tenth of what We had granted to those (of old); yet they belied My Messengers. Then how (terrible) was My denial (punishment)!
وَكَذَّبَ wakadhaba And denied
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
مِن min (were) before them
قَبْلِهِمْ qablihim (were) before them
وَمَا wamā and not
بَلَغُوا۟ balaghū they have attained
مِعْشَارَ miʿ'shāra a tenth
مَآ (of) what
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ātaynāhum We (had) given them
فَكَذَّبُوا۟ fakadhabū But they denied
رُسُلِى ۖ rusulī My Messengers
فَكَيْفَ fakayfa so how
كَانَ kāna was
نَكِيرِ nakīri My rejection

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 45) ➊ Both {وَ كَذَّبَ الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ… : ’’ مِعْشَارَ ‘‘} and {’’عُشْرٌ‘‘} mean one-tenth. That is, the earlier nations that were destroyed, the stature, strength, wealth, and grandeur that were granted to them—even one-tenth of that is not possessed by these disbelievers of Arabia. See Surah Ar-Rum (9), Al-Mu’min (21), and Surah Al-Ahqaf (26).
{ فَكَذَّبُوْا رُسُلِيْ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَكِيْرِ:’’ نَكِيْرِ ‘‘} is originally {’’نَكِيْرِيْ‘‘}; for the sake of matching the endings of the verses (final letters), the ya was omitted, and the kasrah was kept to indicate that the ya is omitted here, meaning “my rejection, my punishment.” They denied my messengers, so see how severely I punished them and how I destroyed them so that not even a trace of them remains. So what status do these helpless ones have that they could escape our grasp?
