وَقَالُوا۟ نَحْنُ أَكْثَرُ أَمْوَٰلًا وَأَوْلَـٰدًا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ ﴿35﴾
And they say: "We are more in wealth and in children, and we are not going to be punished."
وَقَالُوا۟ waqālū And they say
نَحْنُ naḥnu We
أَكْثَرُ aktharu (have) more
أَمْوَٰلًۭا amwālan wealth
وَأَوْلَـٰدًۭا wa-awlādan and children
وَمَا wamā and not
نَحْنُ naḥnu we
بِمُعَذَّبِينَ bimuʿadhabīna will be punished

(Ayah 35) {وَ قَالُوْا نَحْنُ اَكْثَرُ اَمْوَالًا وَّ اَوْلَادًا … :} That is, firstly, they boasted about the abundance of their wealth and children and belittled the prophets and their followers, just as Pharaoh considered himself superior because he was the king of Egypt and called Musa (peace be upon him) "mean" (insignificant). See Surah Az-Zukhruf (51 to 54) {’’ وَ مَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِيْنَ ‘‘} Secondly, they considered their prosperity as proof of Allah’s pleasure, saying that if Allah were displeased with them, why would He give them more wealth and children than you? This, they argued, was proof that no punishment would ever come upon them. (In {بِمُعَذَّبِيْنَ }, the letter "ba" is for emphasis of negation.) Rather, if the Day of Judgment is established, even there, these blessings will be given to us alone. See Surah Maryam (77 to 80) and Surah Al-Muddathir (11).
