Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease (evil desire for illegal sex), and those who spread false news among the people in Al-Madinah stop not, We shall certainly let you overpower them: then they will not be able to stay in it as your neighbours but a little while.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
The meaning of {لَىِٕنْلَّمْيَنْتَهِالْمُنٰفِقُوْنَ …: ’’ لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَبِهِمْ ‘‘ ’’أَغْرٰييُغْرِيْ‘‘} is to incite, provoke, inflame, or impose. From the previous and the current verse under exegesis, it is understood that in Madinah, some hypocrites and those harboring wickedness and immorality in their hearts used to harass women on the way and spread false news to trouble the Muslims, as they did in the case of the slander against Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). In these verses, first, women were commanded to observe hijab so that such ill-natured people would not dare to commit any molestation. Then, in this verse, a warning is given that if these hypocrites and those with a disease of immorality in their hearts do not desist from this harassment, molestation, and rumor-mongering, then We will impose you upon them to eradicate them, and then they will hardly be able to remain with you in Madinah. Then either they will be exiled or cut into pieces. The reality is that hidden adultery and other sins are not as harmful to society as openly harassing women on the streets, attempting to assault them, or committing evil openly and boldly. Therefore, a very stern warning has been given to prevent this.
