Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 57) ➊ { اِنَّالَّذِيْنَيُؤْذُوْنَاللّٰهَوَرَسُوْلَهٗ … :} In the Noble Qur’an, the mention of promise and warning, and encouragement and deterrence, both run side by side. Along with mentioning the greatness and status of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the sight of Allah and His angels, and with reference to his praise and commendation, the believers are commanded to send blessings and peace upon him. At the same time, those people are mentioned who, instead of praise and commendation, cause harm to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). It is said that upon them Allah has sent His curse in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment. By these people are meant the hypocrites, who wore the cloak of Islam, but never missed an opportunity to harm the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Because it is unimaginable for any believer to deliberately harm the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
➋ To harm Allah means to associate partners with Him, to speak disrespectfully about Him, and to commit those acts which He has declared forbidden, such as the saying of the Jews: « يَدُاللّٰهِمَغْلُوْلَةٌ»[ المائدۃ : ۶۴ ], the saying of the Christians: « الْمَسِيْحُابْنُاللّٰهِ»[التوبۃ : ۳۰ ], and the polytheists declaring the angels as Allah’s daughters and associating idols and Allah’s creation as His partners. Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَاأَحَدٌأَصْبَرُعَلٰیأَذًیسَمِعَهُمِنَاللّٰهِ،يَدَّعُوْنَلَهُالْوَلَدَ،ثُمَّيُعَافِيْهِمْوَيَرْزُقُهُمْ ][ بخاري، التوحید، باب قول اللّٰہتعالٰی : « إن اللّٰہ ھو الرزاق…»: ۷۳۷۸ ] “There is no one more patient upon hearing something hurtful than Allah; people ascribe children to Him, yet He grants them well-being and provides for them.”
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Allah the Exalted said: [ يُؤْذِيْنِيابْنُآدَمَيَسُبُّالدَّهْرَوَأَنَاالدَّهْرُأُقَلِّبُاللَّيْلَوَالنَّهَارَ ][ مسلم، الألفاظ من الأدب وغیرھا، باب النہي عن سب الدھر : 2246/2 ] “The son of Adam harms Me, (in that) he curses time, while I am time; I alternate the night and the day.”
Besides this, harming the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the believers is also harming Allah, as when Ka’b bin Ashraf satirized the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the believers, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَنْلِكَعْبِبْنِالْأَشْرَفِ؟فَإِنَّهُقَدْآذَیاللّٰهَوَرَسُوْلَهُ ][ بخاري، الرھن، باب رھن السلاح : ۲۵۱۰ ] “Who is ready (to kill) Ka’b bin Ashraf? For he has harmed Allah and His Messenger.”
➌ To harm the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) means any kind of harm, whether physical or spiritual, whether by denying him or opposing him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was subjected to every kind of hardship. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ لَقَدْأُخِفْتُفِياللّٰهِوَمَايُخَافُأَحَدٌوَلَقَدْأُوْذِيْتُفِياللّٰهِوَمَايُؤْذٰیأَحَدٌ ][ ترمذي، صفۃ القیامۃ والرقائق والورع، باب : ۲۴۷۲ ] “I have been threatened for the sake of Allah as no one else has been threatened, and I have been harmed for the sake of Allah as no one else has been harmed.” Among these harms in Makkah were being called a poet, soothsayer, or magician, being mocked, having the entrails and filth of a camel thrown upon him while in prostration, being strangled with a sheet, being besieged in the valley of Abu Talib for three years, and the people of Ta’if not only verbally abusing him but also pelting him with stones, etc. In Madinah, the verbal abuse and taunts of the hypocrites were also included, such as statements like {’’ لَيُخْرِجَنَّالْاَعَزُّمِنْهَاالْاَذَلَّ ‘‘} and {’’ وَيَقُوْلُوْنَهُوَاُذُنٌ ‘‘}, which were a source of severe pain for him. In the previous verses, some things that caused harm to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were also prohibited, which were not generally known to be harmful, especially the matters mentioned in verse (53).
➍ Among the ways of harming the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), besides denying and opposing him, is also to slander his pure wives or to speak ill about his loved ones.
