Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the Mujrimûn (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) will swear that they stayed not but an hour - thus were they ever deluded [away from the truth (i.e. they used to tell lies and take false oaths, and turn away from the truth) in this life of the world)]

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 55){ وَيَوْمَتَقُوْمُالسَّاعَةُ …:} On the Day of Resurrection, the criminals will swear oaths that they did not remain except for one hour, meaning their life in the world was no more than an hour. They did not have enough time to recognize their Lord or to act upon the words of their messengers. Their purpose in this will be to say that in such a short time, the proof was not established against us, so we are excused. (Ibn Kathir) That is, just as these people in the world recognized the truth and knowingly left it for falsehood, and would swear oaths on the truth of falsehood, in the same way, in the Hereafter, even though they know that they remained in the world for such a period that if they had wanted to know or accept, they could have done so. (Fatir: 37) They will swear false oaths that they did not remain in the world for more than an hour and will think that, just as in the world, here too their lie will succeed because of their oaths. See Surah Al-Mujadila (18).
