(And remain always) turning in repentance to Him (only), and be afraid and dutiful to Him; and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and be not of Al-Mushrikûn (the polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 31) ➊ { مُنِيْبِيْنَاِلَيْهِ … :} That is, you and your Ummah should keep your face straight for this religion, in such a way that whoever among you has deviated from his True Master in any way, then he should return to Him. {’’ وَاتَّقُوْهُ ‘‘} And keep fearing Him in your heart.
➋ {وَاَقِيْمُواالصَّلٰوةَ :} Turning to Allah, His Taqwa, and fear are actions of the heart. To express this openly before everyone, it is necessary to establish prayer, because it is the pillar of the religion and such a symbol of Islam by which a person's being a believer or a polytheist is determined, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ بَيْنَالرَّجُلِوَبَيْنَالشِّرْكِوَالْكُفْرِتَرْكُالصَّلَاةِ ][ مسلم، الإیمان، باب بیان إطلاق اسم الکفر… : ۸۲ ] "Between a man and shirk and kufr is the abandonment of prayer."
➌ {وَلَاتَكُوْنُوْامِنَالْمُشْرِكِيْنَ :} And do not do any such act by which you would be counted among the polytheists. Neither commit open shirk by associating anyone with Allah and worshipping him, whether it is the worship of a living being or a dead one, an idol, a grave, or fire, etc. Nor commit hidden shirk, which is showing off, and do not take the polytheists as heartfelt friends, because by doing so you will be counted among them. He said: «{ وَمَنْيَّتَوَلَّهُمْمِّنْكُمْفَاِنَّهٗمِنْهُمْ }»[ المائدۃ : ۵۱ ] "And whoever takes them (the Jews and Christians) as friends, then surely he is one of them." And do not imitate the polytheists, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَنْتَشَبَّهَبِقَوْمٍفَهُوَمِنْهُمْ ][ أبوداوٗد، اللباس، باب في لبس الشھرۃ : ۴۰۳۱، عن ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنھما و قال الألباني حسن صحیح ] "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Do not take anyone's statement as your religion in opposition to the commands of Allah and His Messenger, whether they are Imams, Pirs, or Dervishes, because for this very reason the Jews and Christians were counted among the polytheists. He said: «{ اِتَّخَذُوْۤااَحْبَارَهُمْوَرُهْبَانَهُمْاَرْبَابًامِّنْدُوْنِاللّٰهِوَالْمَسِيْحَابْنَمَرْيَمَ }»[ التوبۃ : ۳۱ ] "They took their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and also the Messiah, son of Mary."
