ضَرَبَ لَكُم مَّثَلًا مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۖ هَل لَّكُم مِّن مَّا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُكُم مِّن شُرَكَآءَ فِى مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَأَنتُمْ فِيهِ سَوَآءٌ تَخَافُونَهُمْ كَخِيفَتِكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ ﴿28﴾
He sets forth for you a parable from your ownselves: Do you have partners among those whom your right hands possess (i.e. your slaves) to share as equals in the wealth We have bestowed on you whom you fear as you fear each other? Thus do We explain the signs in detail to a people who have sense.
ضَرَبَ ḍaraba He sets forth

رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ razaqnākum We have provided you
فَأَنتُمْ fa-antum so you
فِيهِ fīhi in it
سَوَآءٌۭ sawāon (are) equal
تَخَافُونَهُمْ takhāfūnahum you fear them
كَخِيفَتِكُمْ kakhīfatikum as you fear
أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ anfusakum yourselves
كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus
نُفَصِّلُ nufaṣṣilu We explain
ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ l-āyāti the Verses
لِقَوْمٍۢ liqawmin for a people
يَعْقِلُونَ yaʿqilūna (who) use reason

(Ayah 28) ➊ { ضَرَبَ لَكُمْ مَّثَلًا مِّنْ اَنْفُسِكُمْ … :} Up to this point, the discussion of monotheism and the Hereafter was intermingled; now the discourse begins purely on monotheism. That is, Allah Almighty has Himself presented the example of the invalidity of polytheism from your own selves, so that you do not have to go far. Just reflect upon yourselves: among your slaves who are in your possession, is there any one of them who shares with you in the provision We have given you, so that you and they become equal in ownership of it, and you fear them as you fear each other among free men? The answer is clearly no; a slave can never be equal to his master, nor a possession to its owner. Then, when you admit that Allah is the Owner of the heavens and the earth and everything in them—angels, humans, jinn, prophets, saints and the righteous, the righteous, stones, trees, idols, etc.—and all are Allah’s possessions, and you yourselves are not willing to make your slaves (who are equal to you in being human) your partners and equals by giving them your authority, then how did you make the created a partner of the Creator, and the possessed a partner of the Owner, who in no way can be equal to Allah? Allah Almighty has presented this example for the polytheists because they also acknowledged that their invented deities were owned by Allah. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the polytheists used to say: [ لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ ] “At your service, You have no partner.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: [ وَيْلَكُمْ، قَدْ قَدْ ] “Woe to you! Stop, stop.” But they would say: [ إِلاَّ شَرِيْكًا هُوَ لَكَ، تَمْلِكُهُ وَ مَا مَلَكَ ] [ مسلم، الحج، باب التلبیۃ و صفتھا … : ۱۱۸۵ ] “But You have a partner whom You own, and of what he owns as well.”

{كَذٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ الْاٰيٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَّعْقِلُوْنَ :} That is, We thus present examples and clearly explain the verses for people who understand.
