Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 77

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَا خَلَـٰقَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَلَا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا يَنظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ وَلَا يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿77﴾
Verily, those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allâh’s Covenant and their oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter (Paradise). Neither will Allâh speak to them, nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful torment.
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
يَشْتَرُونَ yashtarūna exchange
بِعَهْدِ biʿahdi (the) Covenant
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
وَأَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ wa-aymānihim and their oaths
ثَمَنًۭا thamanan (for) a price
قَلِيلًا qalīlan little
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika those
لَا no
خَلَـٰقَ khalāqa share
لَهُمْ lahum for them
فِى in
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ l-ākhirati the Hereafter
وَلَا walā and not
يُكَلِّمُهُمُ yukallimuhumu will speak to them
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
وَلَا walā and not
يَنظُرُ yanẓuru look
إِلَيْهِمْ ilayhim at them
يَوْمَ yawma (on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection
وَلَا walā and not
يُزَكِّيهِمْ yuzakkīhim purify them
وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them
عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

(Ayah 77){ اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يَشْتَرُوْنَ …: } It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man brought some merchandise to the market and placed it there, then swore an oath over it, saying, "I paid such-and-such amount for this merchandise," although he had not paid that amount (or he said, "I am being offered such-and-such amount for this merchandise," although he was not being offered that amount). The purpose of the oath was to entrap a Muslim in the transaction, so this verse was revealed about him: «اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يَشْتَرُوْنَ بِعَهْدِ اللّٰهِ وَ اَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيْلًا » [بخاری، البیوع، باب ما یکرہ من الحلف فی البیع : ۲۰۸۸، ۴۵۵۱ ] That is, those who consume people's wealth through breach of covenant, dishonesty, and false oaths, Allah will be so angry with them that in the Hereafter they will have no share, nor will Allah speak to them, nor will He look at them (with mercy), nor will He purify them, and for them there will be a painful punishment. Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears a false oath in order to unlawfully consume the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while He is extremely angry with him." Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three people with whom Allah will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify on the Day of Resurrection. (They are:) the one who lets his garment hang (below the ankles), the one who reminds others of his favors, and the one who sells his goods by means of a false oath."
