ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا۟ لَن تَمَسَّنَا ٱلنَّارُ إِلَّآ أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَٰتٍ ۖ وَغَرَّهُمْ فِى دِينِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ ﴿24﴾
This is because they say: "The Fire shall not touch us but for a number of days." And that which they used to invent regarding their religion has deceived them.
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
بِأَنَّهُمْ bi-annahum (is) because they
قَالُوا۟ qālū say
لَن lan Never
تَمَسَّنَا tamassanā will touch us
ٱلنَّارُ l-nāru the Fire
إِلَّآ illā except
أَيَّامًۭا ayyāman (for) days
مَّعْدُودَٰتٍۢ ۖ maʿdūdātin numbered
وَغَرَّهُمْ wagharrahum And deceived them
فِى in
دِينِهِم dīnihim their religion
مَّا what
كَانُوا۟ kānū they were
يَفْتَرُونَ yaftarūna inventing

(Ayah 24){ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهُمْ قَالُوْا لَنْ تَمَسَّنَا النَّارُ …:} That is, what has emboldened them to openly deviate from the truth and to shamelessly commit even the gravest of sins is that they have no fear of Allah’s grasp and punishment. Their forefathers left them entangled in various delusions and false hopes: sometimes they claim to be Allah’s sons and beloved ones (Ma’idah: 18), sometimes they say that Paradise was created only for them [بقرہ : ۱۱۱ ], and sometimes they say that even if we are punished a little, it will not be for more than a few days; our elders, whose followers we are and whose support we hold, have so much influence over Allah that even if He wants, He will not be able to punish us. (See also Baqarah: 78–80) And the Christians have fabricated the doctrine of atonement, thereby abolishing the entire matter of punishment for sins. That is, the Messiah (peace be upon him) was crucified for the sins of his community, by which all the sins of the community were forgiven. Now it is enough to become a Christian, then do whatever you wish, the Messiah (peace be upon him) has already atoned for all sins.

The same is now the case with many Muslims: some have made Shaykh Jilani the one who forcibly snatches souls from the Angel of Death, and some consider the martyrdom of Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) as atonement for the sins of his followers. [فَإِلَی اللّٰہِ الْمُشْتَکٰی ]
