Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 172) This is the incident of Hamra’ al-Asad, that is, the day after the Battle of Uhud. The details are that when the polytheists, after returning from Uhud, had gone a few stages away, they began to say among themselves that what foolishness we committed by returning without completely finishing off the Muslims. Thus, they began to plan another attack on Madinah. On the other hand, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) received this information, he ordered the Muslims to set out in pursuit of the polytheists, so that they would not actually turn back and attack Madinah. At that time, although most of those who had participated in Uhud were severely wounded and exhausted, they immediately set out in obedience to the command of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). When they reached Hamra’ al-Asad (a place about eight miles from Madinah), the polytheists received news of their coming and said among themselves that this time let us return, we will come again next year. In view of this situation, the Prophet (peace be upon him) also returned to Madinah. Thus, the verse refers to this incident and gives glad tidings to the Muslims. (Ibn Kathir)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her nephew Urwah: “O my nephew! Both your fathers, Zubair (your father) and Abu Bakr (your maternal grandfather), were among them. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) suffered those hardships at Uhud and the polytheists departed, he felt fear that they might return, so he said: ‘Who will go after them?’ So seventy men among them responded, including Abu Bakr and Zubair.” [ بخاری، المغازی، باب : «الذین استجابوا للہ والرسول» : ۴۰۷۷، عن عائشۃ رضی اللہ عنہا ]
