Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Think not of those who are killed in the Way of Allâh as dead. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 169) In this verse, the doubt of the hypocrites that "participating in jihad is unnecessarily throwing oneself into destruction" has been refuted in another way. It is said, no, rather through this, eternal life is attained, martyrs receive high ranks with Allah, they receive every kind of blessing and pleasure with their Lord, this life is the real life but it is not the worldly life, rather it is with Allah, which is hidden from your sight, which is called "Barzakh" and which you cannot comprehend. It is said: «وَلٰكِنْلَّاتَشْعُرُوْنَ»[ البقرۃ : ۱۵۴ ] "But you do not understand (this life)." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this noble verse «وَلَاتَحْسَبَنَّالَّذِيْنَقُتِلُوْافِيْسَبِيْلِاللّٰهِاَمْوَاتًا», so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Their (the martyrs') souls are in the forms of green birds and for them, lamps are suspended by the Divine Throne, they eat and drink from wherever they wish in Paradise, then they return to those same lamps hanging under the Throne." [ مسلم، الإمارۃ، باب بیان أن أرواح الشھداء فی الجنۃ… : ۱۸۸۷ ]
