(What is the matter with you?) When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: "From where does this come to us?" Say (to them), "It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds)." And Allâh has power over all things.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. (Ayah 165) ➊ {اَوَلَمَّاۤاَصَابَتْكُمْ …:} That is, in Uhud, seventy of your men were martyred, but in Badr, you killed seventy of their men and captured seventy, and a captive is also considered as one killed, because if the captor wishes, he may kill him. ➋ {هُوَمِنْعِنْدِاَنْفُسِكُمْ:} That is, because of your sins, or because of your own preference. (Fath al-Qadeer) The first case means that it was due to your own weaknesses and shortcomings, and due to the disobedience of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), which the archers committed by leaving their positions. (Qurtubi) In the second case, it would mean because you chose ransom. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had given the companions the choice regarding the captives of Badr, that if you wish to take ransom, then in exchange, seventy of your men will be martyred in the future. Thus, the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) accepted this. The Qur’an here, with the words « هُوَمِنْعِنْدِاَنْفُسِكُمْ», points to this very reality.
