Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And those who, when they have committed Fâhishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allâh and ask forgiveness for their sins; - and none can forgive sins but Allâh - and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 135) ➊ {وَالَّذِيْنَاِذَافَعَلُوْافَاحِشَةً …:} That is, if due to human weakness they commit a sin, they immediately remember Allah, repent and seek forgiveness, and ask Allah for pardon. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A man committed a sin and said: 'O my Lord! I have committed a sin, so forgive me.' So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'My servant has committed a sin and he has realized that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them, so I have forgiven My servant.' Then he committed another sin and said: 'O my Lord! I have committed another sin, so forgive it.' So Allah said: 'My servant has realized that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them, (O angels! bear witness that) I have forgiven My servant.' Then the servant refrained as long as Allah willed, then he committed another sin and said: 'O my Lord! I have committed another sin, so forgive it.' So Allah said: 'My servant has realized that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for them, (O angels! bear witness that) I have forgiven My servant, so let him do as he wishes.'" [ بخاری، التوحید، باب قول اللہ تعالٰی : «یریدون أن یبدلوا کلام اللہ» : ۷۵۰۷۔ مسلم، التوبۃ، باب قبول التوبۃ… : ۲۷۵۸ ] ➋ {وَلَمْيُصِرُّوْاعَلٰىمَافَعَلُوْا …:} The meaning of persistence is to stubbornly continue and to keep committing sins carelessly, without expressing remorse or repenting. Otherwise, if after sincerely repenting a person commits a sin again, it is not called persistence, as mentioned in the previous benefit. {”وَهُمْيَعْلَمُوْنَ“} That is, upon knowing that something is a sin, they do not persist in it.
