Surah Al-Qasas (28) — Ayah 80

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا وَلَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ ﴿80﴾
But those who had been given (religious) knowledge said: "Woe to you! The Reward of Allâh (in the Hereafter) is better for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and this none shall attain except those who are As-Sâbirûn (the patient in following the truth)."
وَقَالَ waqāla But said
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
أُوتُوا۟ ūtū were given
ٱلْعِلْمَ l-ʿil'ma the knowledge
وَيْلَكُمْ waylakum Woe to you
ثَوَابُ thawābu (The) reward
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
خَيْرٌۭ khayrun (is) better
لِّمَنْ liman for (he) who
ءَامَنَ āmana believes
وَعَمِلَ waʿamila and does
صَـٰلِحًۭا ṣāliḥan righteous (deeds)
وَلَا walā And not
يُلَقَّىٰهَآ yulaqqāhā it is granted
إِلَّا illā except
ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ l-ṣābirūna (to) the patient ones

(Ayah 80) ➊ { وَ قَالَ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْعِلْمَ … :} Those who had been given knowledge said, The reward of Allah is far better for those who believe and do righteous deeds than this adornment and splendor obtained through disobedience to Allah." In this verse, the reward of Allah refers to that noble provision which is attained in this world and the Hereafter as a result of striving while adhering to Allah’s commands.

{ وَ لَا يُلَقّٰىهَاۤ اِلَّا الصّٰبِرُوْنَ:} There are three types of patience: patience in adhering to Allah’s commands, i.e., remaining steadfast upon them; patience in refraining from His disobedience, i.e., continually avoiding it; and patience in the face of calamities. That is, Allah’s reward is granted only to those who possess such patience and steadfastness that they remain firmly committed to lawful means, whether they receive little provision or much, completely avoid the unlawful, no matter how many benefits it may bring, and endure every hardship and difficulty that comes due to this truthfulness and honesty. Considering the hardships of the world as temporary and short-lived, they somehow get through them and never utter a word of complaint against Allah. The reward given by Allah, whether little or much, that a believer receives in this world, is better than the wealth and possessions of a disbeliever, no matter how much he has, because the believer’s sense of joy in obeying Allah, patience and contentment with the provision given by Him, and the peace and tranquility attained thereby, render the disbeliever’s wealth, children, and adornment meaningless in comparison, which, according to Allah’s command, are a cause of countless sorrows and punishment for them, as He said: «{ فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ اَمْوَالُهُمْ وَ لَاۤ اَوْلَادُهُمْ اِنَّمَا يُرِيْدُ اللّٰهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ بِهَا فِي الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا وَ تَزْهَقَ اَنْفُسُهُمْ وَ هُمْ كٰفِرُوْنَ [ التوبۃ : ۵۵ ] "So let not their wealth nor their children impress you; Allah only intends to punish them through these in the life of this world and that their souls should depart while they are disbelievers." And in the Hereafter, Allah’s reward is far better than the worldly adornment and wealth of the disbelievers because this is temporary and that is everlasting; this is mixed with countless worries and sorrows, while that is free from every kind of worry and sorrow.
